preview for Tested | Salsa Blackthorn Carbon GX

Salsa's Blackthorn full-suspension trail bike uses the same frame, rear triangle, and Split-Pivot suspension design as its longer-travel twin, the Cassidy. But with a different suspension link and a shorter travel shock to create 140mm of rear-wheel travel, and paired to a 160mm fork upfront. Unsurprisingly, Salsa knows how to design a no-nonsense trail bike. The Blackthorn uses modern geometry with a roomy 472mm of reach on a size medium and a 64.6º head tube angle. Super-Boost rear spacing might annoy some, but it allows for a surprisingly short chainstay length of 431mm while maintaining tire clearance for a 2.6-inch tire.

Matt Phillips digs deeper into what he liked about the Blackthorn, the features we thought were extra clever, and where he thought the Blackthorn excelled.
