Elite Suito T Interactive Trainer

$680 at Backcountry

The sturdy steel Suito is the best new trainer we tested this year. It comes preinstalled with a Shimano 11-speed cassette and preassembled legs. Compared with the company’s higher-end Drivo II, this direct-drive trainer sacrifices only a smidge of accuracy (+/-2.5% vs. +/-0.5%) but offers faster resistance transitions and the freedom to ride untethered. (The Drivo II is managed through the company’s My E-Training app, which costs $18.95 a year.) And that’s all for $400 less.

When disconnected from the virtual world, the Suito offered the most generous momentum experience of any other trainer in our test—in other words, they can go fast without worrying about topping out the resistance.

Best Smart Computer

Garmin Edge 530

On Sale
Edge 530

The 530 is Garmin’s best overall bike computer, and one of the best on the market. It has almost every feature imaginable, and it’s (mostly) reliable and (mostly) easy to use. Compact and light, with good battery life, the 530 has a nice-sized screen that’s sharp and bright, and comes with loads of features.

It connects to almost everything—Bluetooth and ANT+ sensors, wifi, your giftee's smartphone—and can be enhanced with third-party apps, widgets, and data fields. One of the most useful features found in the 530 and other newer Garmin devices is Climbpro, which alerts users to upcoming climbs and displays the remaining distance and pitch (this works only when users are following a preloaded route, though).

Also for set routes and locations saved on the device, the 530 has built-in maps and can provide turn-by-turn directions. Endurance athletes can more than double the 530’s run time by linking Garmin’s Charge Power Pack.

Wahoo Fitness KICKR

KICKR

Wahoo Fitness KICKR

Now 17% Off

The Kickr has consistently been one of the most reliable and user-friendly trainers available making it a great gift for any cyclist. The newest version measures power more accurately than the 2018 edition—within one percent—and allows for some side-to-side movement while riding. The brand's Axis rubber feet are paired with three sets of plastic cups that fit over the feet to moderate side-to-side movement. The largest cups completely encapsulate the rubber feet and keep the trainer fixed in place, while the smallest leave the flexible rubber feet largely exposed and allow the bike five degrees of lateral movement.

It’s just enough that riding felt far more comfortable than if we were to be locked in place, but not so much that the bike moves unnaturally. The ride feel is also more lively than it is on the previous Kickr. Riders no longer need to perform a spindown to calibrate the trainer, and the Kickr can simulate gradients up to 20 percent.

It comes preinstalled with an 11-speed Shimano/SRAM-compatible cassette, works with most 8-, 9-, 10-, 11, and 12-speed setups, and plays well with most third-party virtual cycling apps.

Bontrager Ion 200 RT/Flare RT Light Set

Bontrager says the Ion 200 RT (front) and Flare RT (rear) daytime running lights are visible from 1.3 miles away. What’s more, with multiple steady modes, flash modes, and the ability to control everything right from your giftee's cycling computer, these lights are super user-friendly. The USB charging port in this tech has an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning it can be submerged for 30 minutes in up to one meter of water. For being so tiny, these pack a lot of power.

WHOOP Strap 4.0 Tracker

Best Smart Band Tracker

WHOOP Strap 4.0 Tracker

The WHOOP band is an activity tracker for people and cyclists who subscribe to the theory that what gets measured gets managed.

It isn’t a watch—just a wristband that tracks and quantifies its user's sleep, stress, activity, and training load to help your giftee better manage and maximize performance. This latest version is 33 percent smaller than its predecessor and features a better battery (which will last up to five days), the ability to broadcast heart rate data to BLE-compatible devices such as bike computers and smartwatches, a completely waterproof charger, and live video functionality that overlays real-time heart rate and strain data.

WHOOP measures everything off the bike to help your gift recipient make the most of their time on it. The subscription service starts at $30 per month, with an upfront cost of $180 that covers the first six months as well as the cost of the strap.

For the Triathlete

Garmin Forerunner 745

For the Triathlete

Garmin Forerunner 745

Looking for a great tech gift for your favorite triathlete? Look no further. Garmin’s newest addition to the Forerunner family, while appearing to be closely related to the more budget-friendly 735XT, has much more in common with the fully loaded 945. In fact, it has most of the same features as its more expensive sibling except offline maps and comparable battery life. However, with a claimed run time of 16 hours with GPS and six hours with GPS and music, this watch should have adequate juice to handle most daily workouts.

The 745 has much-improved location tracking now that it utilizes GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS satellites, and multi-sport athletes will appreciate that the watch can actually determine which lane of a running track they’re on. Other sport-specific features include Garmin’s ClimbPro, pulse oxygen data, training load, and stress tracking, heat and altitude acclimation, and incident detection.

Best Tough Smartwatch

Polar Grit X Watch

Polar Grit X Watch

Credit: Polar

Polar finally gets into the rugged, outdoors scene with the Grit X, designed to compete with the Garmin Fēnix and Suunto 9. Like those watches, it has a long-lasting battery, navigation capabilities, and advanced workout-tracking features. But on your giftee's wrist, the Grit X is smaller than those other models.

The battery will last 40 hours in standard GPS mode (taking a position reading every second), but like the Fēnix and 9, they can boost that lifespan by reducing the frequency of its tracking—up to 100 hours if it pings their location every two minutes and all other sensors are disabled. That’s longer than many of us are willing to ride in one shot, but it means they can record multiple jaunts without running out of juice.

Like many high-end watches, the Grit auto syncs with most major online fitness platforms like Strava, MyFitnessPal, and TrainingPeaks, as well as Polar’s own online training management platform, Polar Flow making it a great techy gift option for tons of people.

ABUS 770A SmartX Bicycle Lock with Bluetooth and Alarm

You read that right: a smart lock for bikes. This Bluetooth-enabled model pairs with your gift recipient's smartphone and will unlock only when it detects that it’s within range. The owner can grant temporary or permanent access to others, so it’s also a great option for shared bikes.

Should someone attempt to steal their ride while locked, the 770A SmartX U Lock will sound a 100-decibel alarm. It charges via a USB port and is resistant to the elements—no need to worry about leaving it outside in a rain storm.

Best 360-Degree Camera

GoPro GoPro MAX

Best 360-Degree Camera

GoPro GoPro MAX

The Max is GoPro’s first camera that can capture footage in 360 degrees, making it the ideal tech toy for recording cycling adventures. Updated image stabilization allows users to log amazingly steady video even while rattling over bone-jarring rocks.

Then there’s the horizon lock function, which keeps the skyline steady in the frame during playback. The camera boasts six microphones, and users have the option of selecting which ones are recording at any given time. Videos are stitched in 6K, and it’s all done on the camera.

Finally, the GoPro app now allows your giftee to edit and manipulate their 360-degree video files right from their phone, so they can record, edit, and share their creations without having to fire up the laptop.

Your giftee simply has to download the Ember app and pair the mug to their phone to set the temperature and customize the LED indicator.

Be forewarned, however: This mug has a way of rendering all others in a cabinet obsolete.

Armed with two technologies and retaining the same quality Specialized is known for, this helmet is on the cutting edge of safety.

The first piece of tech, ANGi, is a 10-gram sensor that can send out a notification to the wearer's emergency contacts when it detects a strong head trauma. MIPS, the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System that allows the wearer's head to rotate within the helmet’s shell (helping diminish forces in a crash), is the second.
